      link between formal business coaching and entrepreneurial success in the Sma
      ll and Medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector. The intervention under investig

      p (SME Loop) in Benin, a 6-month training programme implemented by GIZ and o
      ther partners promoting capacity building of SMEs with the aim to increase b
      usiness turnover and create long-term sustainable jobs. By means of a random
      ized controlled trial (RCT) design, SMEs in each class are randomly assigned
       to treatment, which involves participation of SME heads/CEOs in the SME loo
      p, or the control group, which do not receive any training. Relying on surve
      ys conducted at different points in time, we investigate whether participati
      on in the SME Loop increases business turnover, revenues, profits and perman
      ent jobs as well as business knowledge and practices. We triangulate and enr
      ich our findings with a qualitative component involving key informant interv
      iews with programme staff and in-depth interviews and focus group discussion
      s with SME heads who participated in the training. This impact evaluation wa

Evaluating an entrepreneurship training tool: experimental evidence from Benin

Abstract

This RIE Research Project investigates the existence and extent of a causal link between formal business coaching and entrepreneurial success in the Small and Medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector. The intervention under investigation is The Small and Medium Enterprises Business Training and Coaching Loop (SME Loop) in Benin, a 6-month training programme implemented by GIZ and other partners promoting capacity building of SMEs with the aim to increase business turnover and create long-term sustainable jobs. By means of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design, SMEs in each class are randomly assigned to treatment, which involves participation of SME heads/CEOs in the SME loop, or the control group, which do not receive any training. Relying on surveys conducted at different points in time, we investigate whether participation in the SME Loop increases business turnover, revenues, profits and permanent jobs as well as business knowledge and practices. We triangulate and enrich our findings with a qualitative component involving key informant interviews with programme staff and in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with SME heads who participated in the training. This impact evaluation was conducted as part of DEval's RIE funding programme.
